Transferring fostering agencies may seem like a daunting process, but don’t worry – we use a streamlined process which aims to have your family settled in within 3 months.

You might be ready to transfer to a new fostering agency if…

  • You aren’t receiving enough payment for the amazing work you do
  • You and your foster children need more support
  • You’re missing out on a sense of fostering community
  • You’re waiting a long time between children being placed with you
  • You aren’t getting suitable referrals for your family

Transferring is easy…

  • You can transfer if you are fostering with your local authority or another independent fostering agency.
  • You can transfer if you have a child in placement, and they’ll stay with you throughout the process.
  • Your enquiry will remain confidential until you’re ready to apply – then you’ll simply need to notify your current provider about your intention to transfer.
  • You’ll only need to formally resign from your current provider – and give the required 28 days’ notice – once you’ve been approved with us.

5 Simple steps to transferring

Transferring to a new fostering provider is very similar to the process of becoming approved as a foster carer in the first place.

From beginning to end, we’ll aim to complete your assessment within 12 weeks. Plus, everything will be kept completely confidential until you’re ready to apply.

Let’s break it down into five easy steps:

Step 1: Enquire

You’ll start by making an enquiry with our team, who’ll tell you all there is to know about being a Fosterplus Scotland foster carer and will help you to get started on your journey.

Step 2: Home Visit

Next, you’ll complete a home visit with a member of our team – either at home or via video call.

They’ll tell you all about what we can offer you as an experienced foster carer. This is also a great chance to go in depth with any questions you may have, and to decide if transferring is right for you and your family.

Step 3: Application

If you decide to move forward with us, you’ll simply need to complete our application form.

It’s only at this stage that you’ll need to notify your current provider of your intention to transfer.

Step 4: Assessment

Once your application has been accepted and we’ve received a copy of your notice of intent, your assessment with us will begin.

This will be a familiar process, involving supportive visits from your dedicated assessing social worker, who will work with you to progress your ‘Form F’ assessment as efficiently as possible. We typically aim to complete transfer assessments within 12 weeks.

Transferring with children in place?

If you’re caring for a young person, you’ll be invited to a Transfer Protocol Meeting within 28 days of receiving your notice of intent to transfer. This meeting brings together everyone involved in the child’s care – including you, the child’s local authority, and a representative from our team – to ensure continuity of care. It’s all about making sure the transition is right for your young person and as smooth as possible for you both.

Step 5: Panel

The final stage of your fostering transfer is your panel meeting and approval – both familiar steps for you.

You’ll be supported throughout by your assessing social worker, who will be alongside you during the meeting. They’ll help guide you as a recommendation is made and submitted to our Agency Decision Maker for approval.

Once you receive your formal approval, you can officially resign from your current provider, giving 28 days’ notice before beginning your journey with the Fosterplus Scotland team.

You are required to have a spare bedroom that’s always available to a foster child. The spare room cannot be shared, and must be big enough to fit a single bed, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers.

To be approved as a foster carer in the UK, you must be a British citizen or have the legal right to remain in the UK without restrictions that would prevent fostering.

The following questions are intended to help us understand your experience with children. Please note that prior experience is not required to become a foster carer, as full training will be provided.
